I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Camino!

Before the Race I had never heard of the Camino de Santiago. I had no idea what to expect. Frankly, I wasn’t really interested. So when I started checking things out on Pinterest a couple days before we started I was blown away by all the information that is available!

Our squad is hiking the French Way! It is one of most popular parts of this massive pilgrim journey that spans France, Italy, Spain and Portugal, at least. I have been in no way attached to walking the journey and I read a blog about a couple where the woman got extremely sick and had to go to the hospital. She refused to quit so she got creative with walking when she could by taking a horse, at a particularly steep point, and a bus on days when she physically couldn’t do the walk. It allowed her to continue the journey.

That opened my mind that to realize “there is more than one way to do this journey!” and that excited me! I dreamed plans take a horse at some point, cycle for a day, walk, and ever scooter some of the journey down the amazing Camino de Santiago. I was really excited to enjoy Papa in all these cool ways!

Day 1 was so awesome! It was hard, but not too bad. Both knees were sore, but manageable. And my partner, Ashlyn, and I had a rhythm to our day. #DoingTheCamino

Day 2 was awesome as well. Ash and I did a little more planning so I could scoot a little more and we no longer were worried about losing track of each other. As the second day progressed I had and screaming pain in my right knee. Grateful that it was only one knee and scared to sit down and not get back up, I pressed on without rest to the next stop. I arrived in Estella. I scooted down hills when possible and hobbled down hills every other time. I was in tremendous pain despite taking 700 milligrams of Aleve. My squad came around and supported me and all the others with injuries.

I smiled as we sat on the ground with our feet elevated against the walls singing and encouraging as we waited for hostel to open for the day. It was my favorite thing ever! I decided that even if I couldn’t walk that I would still travel to each overnight stop with my squad and the amazing people we were communing with each day. I love these people and I can enjoy them regardless of whether I’m actually walking or getting creative with my journey. Sarayu, thanks for that previous notice through that blog to help me feel ok with this crushed expectation.

Today was a good day! I was told my doctor’s fee was free until they found out I was American; I found out the pussing bites I have are chinches aka bug bites, and that I have tendinitis; and my squad loved me so well I cried. Like I said, today was a good day!!
