Today we completed our first, Kid’s Club. This ministry is specifically geared for the children of the slums that we serve.

Over the past week, we have come to an open area near their homes everyday from 4pm to 6 pm. It is the time after they get home from school, but before they have to go to work with their parents. (Yes, there are children working with their parents in the evening and to make matters worst some of these families are working in the Red Light District, but I’ll get to that in another post).
Our goal is pray, play games with them, love on them, and hopefully leave them happier and closer to Jesus than before we found them. The culmination of the week is on Saturday. We do an actual Vacation Bible School lesson. This particular week is a time of celebration for the Loh Kothang and Yei Peng festivals in the Thailand culture.

We prayed for the kids, did a couple games, sang a couple songs, and did a craft. One of the things I have heard as we have come into these countries is that Western Christians not only come in and change the religion, but inadvertently invalidate the culuture. It is immediately apparent that the style of the buildings are changed, the daily rituals are halted, and their leagacy is lost… all in the name Christianity. But today we did not do that.
Today, we used the idea of Loh Krathong to redeem the tradition of creating a boat to ship their sins down the river. Instead, we made a boat that carried Jesus’ light out into the world.
The kids loved the activity and we loved the kids. Today we brought light to the slums.
