He wants each man, in the long run, to be able to recognize all creatures (even himself) as glorious and excellent things. He wants to kill their animal self-love as soon as possible, but it is His long-term policy, I fear, to restore them a new kind of self-love – a charity and gratitude for all selves, including their own; **when they have really learned to love their neighbors as themselves, they will be allowed to love themselves as their neighbors.
-The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
Can I be honest and transparent in saying that I hate museums? I’m very disinterested in history. Not all history, but if I don’t “connect” with the story, it’s in one ear and out the other!
That’s probably not a good thing…But God knows my heart… 🙂
So today was an interesting day since I decided to willingly ‘kill my animal self-love’. I decided to go to a temple as a surprise for my teammate. This should not be a big deal, but it is because I truly hate museums, and therefore since I think of temples as being in the realm of museums, I hate them too.
Ebony, a really cool person who has been staying at the same hostel, shared that she and her friend Lise traveled to the top of the Suthep mountain to see a temple. Even though they saw the temple, her favorite part was the view of the city and she showed me some amazing pictures.
Immediately, I thought of Kayla! She has enjoyed every temple that we have visited around the city. She has this habit of drawing out syllables. So if I were to explain in written form how she feels about temples, she would say she LOOOVVEESSSSS TEMPLES! …And I think that at every single temple I have told her how much I hate temples and museums… But the thought of seeing the amazing views and doing something loving for Kayla was enough to convince me to follow through.
So up the mountain, we went!
Ashlyn helped me to keep Kayla on the edge of her seat as waited until the last possible second to tell her where we going. We drove through the city, up the winding road around the mountain, and arrived at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.
The huge smile on Kayla’s face was priceless!
The chance to love on two of my squadmates as my “neighbors” as much as I love myself was priceless. And God rewarded me with something that I love… amazing views of His glorious artistry used to create this earth.
Step out and do something you hate in order to love on someone. It’s worth it!
Here are the pictures from our outing; Enjoy!
