So it’s a pretty common question among the kiddos, “what’s your favorite animal?” or more recently “what’s your spirit animal?” Generally I say a giraffe, but after this passage these little critters may have them beat.
“Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise.
Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer.
Coneys are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags;
Locusts have no king, yet they advance together in ranks;
Lizards can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings’ palaces.”
So this month I’ve been reading through Proverbs and that book is packed with wisdom. Then Proverb 30 comes along with the sayings of Agur. It starts talking about insects and small creatures that to many seem insignificant. However, verses 24-28 taught me there is a lot to learn from those creatures that appear small and unimportant. The verses talk about animals that are uniquely wise. They are only taught by GOD and possess skills that allow them to cope. They are masterfully cunning and able to survive despite severe limitations that expose them to threats that endanger their very existence.
ANTS
These little sneaky critters that infiltrate our homes in search of crumbs, teach us the value in making provision for our future. Their hard work overcomes their individual weakness and limitations. While ants can lift 10 times their body weight, they are still significantly tiny, so their strength has severe limitations. Yet their size doesn’t hold them back from working hard and preparing for their future. Similarly we should give careful thought to investing in our coming eternity. Storing His truth in our hearts.
CONEYS
Otherwise known as badgers, are weak creatures that live among the cliffs. They take care to have a place of refuge among the strong rocks. So despite their physical weakness they make their home among strong rocks for protection. Jesus claims to be our cornerstone. Our rock. Our firm foundations. So even though we are weak, tired, discouraged when we make our home in Him we find rest, peace, freedom.
LOCUSTS
Portray what it means to live a life in true community. Even without a designated leader they cooperate with each other, advance in ranks, and overwhelm anything in their way. They show us that regardless of earthly leadership, teamwork can truly win the day. They show us community is important and that all of us have a special role in the kingdom. They show us that together we are far more powerful than when we believe the lie to isolate ourselves with past hurts, fears, or busyness.
LIZARD
Ok, so this critter is pretty cool when you think about it. It is small. Has no teeth or means to protect itself. Can be easily caught with our hands. So even though it is basically defenseless, small, weak it can be found in the king’s palace! Showing us that even the humblest of creatures can attain the highest circles of society. When we use our gifts and unique skills, God can take us anywhere.
So with all of that said, here is how these little creatures have impacted my life. At times when I feel exhausted. Weak. Unqualified. Rejected. At times when pursuing community seems too difficult because of excuses; being hurt, fear, insecurity, or just had a long day.
This proverb reminds me that these times are the perfect opportunity for God to show His power and goodness. When I humble myself to the point where I proclaim my weaknesses. Where I do not seek glory for myself; all honor and glory belongs to God. When I choose to keep my focus on Jesus and put in the work and faith to trust in God’s will. When I choose to see people as God does and pursue them despite of the risk of hurt or rejection. When I claim the gifts and talents God has given me and use them to make His name known. Then God can show me a new depth to His true character.
May God be gracious to us and bless us
And make His face shine upon us
That your ways may be known on earth,
Your salvation among all nations.
