Greetings from Africa,
I have been here almost three weeks. It definitely feels a lot longer. We are in what feels like the middle of no where and have no access to internet. A teammate is posting our blogs for our squad. We are working with an organization called HopEthiopia. We are living on a compound where 30 beautiful children live. HopEthiopia is an orphanage for children in the community who need a home. That is just a tip of the iceberg on what the organization does for the community.
My squad and I are doing various projects. We are building breaks, teaching and doing sports ministry. A few of my teammates and I are going to start working with woman from the community. We are going to do bible lessons with them, teach nutrition, hygiene and job skill training.
Our view is breathtaking. We have to find ways to entertain ourselves on our down time. I am doing lots of journaling, reading and thinking. There are no vehicles, no supermarkets, and no public transportation. People get around by donkeys, horses and wagons. The closest thing to a store is a small shack where the extent of snacks sold is popcorn and coke. There is a market that happens three days a week. Imagine sticks that divide spaces, mud, and lots of donkeys and goats. The first time I walked to the market, I felt like I was in a parade. We stood out for obvious reasons.
It’s rains a lot where we are at. The sound of the rain is comforting on the tin roof, it reminds me of my grandmas house.
The days feel long sometimes but the weeks go by fast. I still can’t believe I am in Africa. We are already half way through this month. We leave Ethiopia in ten days. Before I know it I will be home. I can’t wait to see my friends and family. I am so excited to see everyone but as you can imagine going home can also feel a little intimidating.
Please pray for my squad and I as we continue to two different countries in Africa. Also, pray for us as we began to transition home.
Love,
Rocky
