Last Friday, a week ago, we went out into the slums of the city to give out lunch to the children.

Our hearts shattered.

That night, after we came back, we were sitting around our room after our daily devotional and listening prayer, sharing what God was teaching us. Soon enough, one of my teammates shared about the anger she was feeling. How could God let these children live in such conditions? How could there be so much brokenness and poverty in the world?

Another teammate chimed in with similar frustrations. Why does she get to live in a comfortable air-conditioned house in a nice suburb of the United States, while these families share a slab of wood on sticks in a slum full of dirt and waste? How is that fair? Why did she get dealt a better hand in life than these children? How are we supposed to “fix” this? Why can’t we?

Our hearts kept breaking. We were upset. Some voices were raised and cuss words filled in the blanks of emotions we could not describe.

Then came the peace.

We can’t fix this. We can only try. We can keep visiting these slums and these people, and we can keep believing that a smile, a hug, a wave, or a simple conversation has the power to change a life. We can hope and pray that these children will come to know that they are worth something. They are not dirt and cooling powder and a styrofoam box of rice. They are people. They are worthy. They are loved. They are royalty.
