Our first week in Mozambique was spent in Incaia, a town 20 minutes away from the city of Macia. There, we spent most of our time travelling to people’s homes out in the bush praying for healing, relationship with God and family reunions. Also, we did a one day vacation bible school event for the children and discipleship conference for the adults on two different occasions. Our ministry in Incaia was one that was not supposed to happened, but it did and it was something I will never forget.

A week and a half later, we were moved to Maputo to work with Beacon of Hope, organized by Angie, along with 2 other teams (Sound and Ruach). Angie is an American nurse who has been on several medical/Christian mission trips for years prior to establishing a bible school for Mozambican men wanting to know Christ and become godly men. She has 4 adopted children: Popu who is 20ish years old and vice president of the organization, Maya her 12 year old daughter, another son who is 10 and Popino her 2 year old son who is also Popu’s nephew. She has 4 godly Mozambican men voluntarily working alongside her to help take care of the compound and continue seeking spiritual growth. In mid-January and early February, 10-12 boys arrived to stay with her for 3 years where they will attend regular school and bible school. We spent the rest of Mozambique working within the organization’s compound hoeing the ground and planting seeds, construction, medical data entry and pouring into Angie and her family.

Living conditions in Mozambique included not having water for at least 48 hours, electricity loss, filter water every day, constant use of bug spray/deet and cortisone,  and sleeping in tents (since we were an additional team all the rooms that had mosquito nets were taken so we used our tents as such). There were days when we were unable to work outside because of the heat and no water. Foods served were very good such as lots of beans and rice; noodles and vegetables; ugali mixed with rice- a favorite; on some occasion we would have biscuit and gravy, chicken pot pie, cakes, hamburger, fries, and coleslaw. Mozambique was a hard month, but a good one.
