Ok maybe it’s not “the big question,” but it is pretty big.
It seems that every time bad things happen, whether they are
natural disasters or political uprisings, someone never fails to ask the
question, “If God loves us so much, why does He let bad things happen?”
We heard this when Hitler began a genocide which resulted in
the deaths of millions.
…when the Khmer Rouge killed millions of their own
countrymen.
…when the Tsunami hit the southern coast of Asia
…when Hurricane Katrina struck the coast of Louisiana.
…when earthquakes devastated the countries of Haiti and Chile.
I can’t pretend to act like I know the answer to this
question. I don’t know the answer and I am not sure if anybody does.
I do know that God still loves us, and no matter how many
disasters come our way His love for us will never cease.
In a book I am currently reading, Scott Bessenecker says
that, “God values the mess of human freedom over the order of a puppet show.”
Even though this does not answer the aforementioned
question, it does give me more of an understanding.
God never intended to control the people he loves the same
way a puppet master controls his puppets, but he each day he grants us the
freedom to do what we want to do. It’s up to us how we choose to use this
freedom.
