Howdy,
We have been here in Malaysia for four days now, and what a wild four days it’s been. For one it feels like we’ve been here forever. Such amazing people. So much hospitality. So much generosity. So much wisdom. It makes you rethink the way you have been living your life. The first two days were intense. Four of us were placed in an amazing ministry. I can’t really say much about it due to security reasons, and I can’t really say the names of the couple we were working with, so from now on they will be known as he-who-must-not-be-named and she-who-must-not-be-named. These two had such a fire for God. They just poured out so much wisdom into us.
Last night we had about a two hour drive back to where we were staying for the night and the rest of my team was asleep I just stayed up asking questions about how they go about reading their bible, what their view is on creation, and just other questions to get to know them. I feel like I’ve grown so much just from talking to them and just seeing how they dedicate themselves to God’s will.
Genesis 2:18 says, “The Lord God said, ’it is not good for the man to be alone, I will make a helper suitable for him.’”
God made us from the very beginning to be in community. God understands the importance of being in community. Therefore it is important to surround yourself with people who can help you grow; help you get closer to God; people that do not pull you into the dark. We are meant to be a light in the dark places, we are not meant to be consumed by the darkness.
Literally 30 seconds ago we finished talking to an amazing man of God. His story is crazy. I’ll try to make it short and still get the point across. Pastor Joe was raised in Fiji and by the age of 17 was on the police force. From there he moved up in the rankings until he was eventually apart of the CIA for the UN. During his time in the CIA he was able to single handedly stop the fighting between the rebels and the government in Namibia. He pulled a grenade on the leaders of both sides and said if they don’t sign a peace treaty that all three of them would die that day. They signed the treaty. Eventually he was part of a covert mission that got him captured and tortured. He was on the brink of death, but God told him, “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.” He managed to escape! He spent a month in the hospital recuperating and hiding from those after him. He then got involved in the same investigation again but was then forced to leave Fiji.
God began to pull his heart in a different direction. He felt like he was being called to teach. He got his masters in theology. And two days ago he listened to what God was doing in his life and left his position at his place of employment here in Malaysia and came on full time at the Church we are staying in.
Speaking with people with such a passion for God helps us grow in our faith. It challenges us. It brings things to surface that can lead to great discussion, whether it be through disagreement or agreement. I am in awe of the amazing people I have met already. I can’t wait to continue working with these amazing people and to surrender myself to learn from them the remainder of this month.
