This blog goes out to my family and friends back home.
Before I go into my list a disclaimer: I have not felt a lot of homesickness. God has given me the blessing of feeling that the places I’ve been are home. Even so there have been times that I have wished for some things from home.
With that, here are 10 things I’ve missed about home:
- Waking up to my older sister, Katelyn, working out.
This was not an everyday occurrence, but it happened enough for me to expect it. While some mornings I would claim annoyance at being woken up I admired her for making the decision to do it.
- My parents reminding me I still need to get my drivers license.
Yes, I am 19 turning 20 this year. No, I don’t have my drivers license. But in all seriousness I actually appreciated that my parents encouraged me to try and get it. And for those who wish to know, yes, I plan on getting my license after my Race.
- Chicken Tortilla Soup.
I have had some extremely delicious food while on the field but I have yet to eat anything that rivals my mom’s Chicken Tortilla Soup. That soup tastes like home, family, and love with hints of lime and cilantro to finish it off. This is hands down one of the top 5 things I’m looking forward to when I get back.
- My dogs.
Enough said.
- (Surprisingly) My younger siblings arguing
I can’t really explain this one. I know that once I’m home and they start an argument I will not be thinking, “Oh! I’ve missed hearing this!” But, alas, while on the field I have missed it.
- Convergence Church & Fuse.
Okay this one is more to say I miss the community from these two places. I have missed seeing the smiling faces of so many people who have loved, prayed for, and supported not just me but also my family.
- Late night/Early morning conversations with friends.
There have been many times when I have stayed up to have a conversation with a friend and have woken up later more spiritually filled then I could have if I had slept instead. Sometimes those conversations are with a group of friends, other times one-on-one. Some goofy, and some more serious. I have missed all greatly. I would like to thank my friends, you know who you are, that have been willing to stay up with me to all hours of the night for these conversations. I miss y’all and I’m praying for each of you.
- Benbrook YMCA.
Again I miss the community I had there. Working there was not always the greatest, okay, sometimes it flat out sucked. But the people I worked with made it worth it. I will always carry fond memories from the weekly in-services and the crazy, sometimes fun and funny, things we would do. I miss the friends I made there and pray they are doing well.
- Car rides in the Rector’s car.
How do I describe this and why I miss it? In that car with so many great friends I have laughed, been challenged to think deeper, had my faith strengthened, participated in silly pranks, and so much more. Thinking back on those times fills my heart with so much joy.
- Hugs.
I miss hugs from my mom and dad. I miss hugs from my little brother, Joshua. I miss the rare, but always special, hugs from my sisters, Katelyn, Megan, and Bethany. I miss hugs from my friend and mentor Abigail Massie. I miss hugs from my friends, Abigail and Madeline Rector, Christin and Candace Kelly, Kaleb Johnson, Brenna Franklin, and so many others. These hugs, these little things that speak volumes, are the things I miss most of all.
So there you have it, 10 things I miss about home.
