Sitting in a plastic chair with my bare feet resting on the concrete, I close my eyes and listen to the worship song at our weekly Christian Surfers meeting. It’s sung in Spanish, but it’s the song Hosanna, so I know what the lyrics are.

Hot tears stream down my face for no reason in particular. But emotion is there, and I allow myself to feel the moment.

The overhead fan creates a calming breeze across my face and through my hair. All the lights are off except Victoria’s blue hammock twinkle lights that are wrapped around a pole.

Hands run through my hair. Twisting. Braiding. Flipping. Combing it out with fingers. Not exactly sure who it is that’s playing with my hair, but I know it’s one of my sisters in Christ sitting behind me.

The moment is magical and precious. I close my eyes and let myself feel. Physical touch is my love language…to the extreme. Something as small as playing with my hair can make me feel so very loved.

Once worship is over, I turn around to see who was playing with my hair. It was my teammate Grace. I thanked her later for this small gesture, and told her it meant more to me than she realized. It made me feel like I was at home, surrounded by my actual sisters in West Virginia. When you know you won’t see your family for nearly a year, it’s easy to feel homesick. It’s hard. Really, really hard. But God knows what we need before we even ask, so I’m thankful that He saw my need to feel loved in that moment. Matthew 6:8

I write this short post to remind us all (including myself)...

Something that may seem small to you may actually be a big deal to someone else.

You can start a chain reaction of love. Easy ways to do this are:

  • Giving someone a hug
  • Complimenting someone’s outfit
  • Pointing out that you see strength in someone, or any other gift you see in them
  • Sitting with the new student at lunch
  • Smiling at someone
  • Saying “I really care about you”
  • Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes
  • Turning the tv off to have a conversation about your day
  • Putting your hand on someone’s back
  • Tell someone you’ll pray for them, and actually do it
  • Being honest
  • Buying another coffee in the morning and giving it to someone at work
  • Telling someone they have a nice smile
  • Introducing yourself to someone
  • Sending someone a card
  • Taking someone out to lunch
  • Watch a sunset together in silence
  • Asking someone how they’re doing today, and actually listening to their response

These are just a few of the ways we can make a big impact for the Kingdom of God by spreading His love. Show love to everyone, especially those who are hard to love. Ask God for wisdom and discernment, and your small gesture will make a BIG difference.

I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!!
