Easter Morning in Malaysia

5:45 am

Age and I venture out into the darkness to catch a taxi. We are trying to go to Teluk Cempedak beach for an Easter sunrise service that starts at 6:30.

6:15 am

Still waiting on a taxi.

6:25 am

Taxi picks us up and we head towards the beach.

6:40 am

We arrive at the beach, but no sign of the group we were supposed to meet for the sunrise service. So we head over to McDonalds. First Mcdonald’s breakfast I’ve had since last August!!!! Yummmm…sausage mcmuffin with egg:)))

6:50 am

Sit on some rocks while eating our Mcdonalds, listening to the waves, and watching the pink and blue clouds change form every minute.

We notice some monkeys, about 30-40 of them, rummaging through the trash behind us. A wave of fear went through me, thinking they may smell the syrup from our pancakes and come attack. Luckily, it looked like they were pretty occupied with fighting over a bag of something, so we finished our food before they noticed us. Watching them is both fascinating and terrifying, especially when they are in such a huge group together.

7:10 am

We finish our coffee while admiring the orange sun peek through the clouds. My mind wanders to Psalm 19–

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard.Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.

God has made a home in the heavens for the sun. It bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding. It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race. The sun rises at one end of the heavens and follows its course to the other end. Nothing can hide from its heat.”

7:30 am

Some locals ask us to take a selfie with them. Well, actually, multiple selfies. 🙂 So of course we smile and throw up some peace signs for the photos.

7:35 am

We wander down the beach and notice a surfer starting to catch some waves, so we sit on some rocks and watch him. Age sketches the scene before her, while I thank God silently for this amazing view and friendship.

We discuss how cool it must have been to be the people who found the empty tomb of Jesus. The thought of that gives me goosebumps!!

As we are discussing Christ being risen from the dead, I look towards the sunrise again and notice the clouds look like they’ve formed a door. The brightness of the sun shines through the “cloud door” as my imagination runs wild, thinking this may be what it looked like to find the empty tomb. He’s not here, He is risen!!

Hebrews 1:3–

“The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.”

Thank you Jesus!!!
