One of my first blogs listed goals that I had for the World Race. With less than 24 hours left until my feet touch American soil, let’s evaluate:

Things to knock off the bucket list in the next year:

  1. Learn Spanish…um, not quite. However, we can now say "back da hell up" in 11 different languages
  2. Dance with Africans–check!
  3. Kiss a RomanianTe pup! (Romanian for "I kiss you")
  4. Meet another Rachel on the other side of the world-yep! Hello Rachel, daughter to our Ugandan contact.

  1. Run in every country I visit-Honduras wins as the smoggiest country, while Kenya offered some elevation to try our cardiac status. Does being chased by gypsies in Romania count as a workout?
  2. Learn how to set up a tent–like a pro.
  3. Climb a mountain–oh yes.
  4. Save someone’s life--I'd like to think so, but maybe I'll never know.
  5. Have someone make a difference in mine–I had the chance to meet Kweyunga Great and his family. So amazing.

  1.  Eat something crazy— chicken brain, chicken eye, cow intestine, fried maggots and crickets, dog…
  2.  Learn how to drive a stick shift–driving overseas is scary. Still working on this one.
  3.  Ride an elephant— check!
  4.  Run with a Kenyan— not quite. We chased Kenyan children, saying "I will eat you" in Swahili…

Things I could definitely die happy without experiencing

  1. Have some creature/bug/scary thing attack me–too many times to count. Not much phased us by the end of the Race.
  2. Catch some disease I have never heard of, and also some I have heard of–many many sicknesses. Cipro became my best friend.
  3. Have my backpack (aka everything) stolenI was obviously too intimidating to mess with
  4. Have a very large, sweaty man sit on me–welcome to African public transportation

  1. Share my sleeping bag with an uninvited hairy animal–tarantula : (
  2.  Share my sleeping bag with a large, uninvited, hairy man–nope, hard pass
  3. Fall off the mountain I am trying to climb-woops, tore my quad month 3
  4. Be eaten by the giraffe I am trying to ride–no, but it would have been interesting…wild giraffes were one of my favorite sights on the safari we went on in Kenya.

This past year has been amazing. long, short, crazy awesome, incredibly challenging, and forever memorable.
