…you’re my star, my best friend
better than Spiderman
better than Superman
better than Batman
better than anyone
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Jesus you’re my superhero, you’re my star my best friend!
You know all those catchy kids songs that are sung in VBS, children’s church, and kids camp? Well, this is one of them sung quite frequently at Asha and almost every morning this month I’ve had this song stuck in my head when I wake up!
The environment at Asha Children’s Home is one that raises the kids to learn to love Christ and live for Him. Every day is doused in prayer by these kids, they have Bible Study daily, and worship every night together.
The day is started at 5 am with prayer when they wake up. Before every meal, one of them leads the others in a repeat-after-me prayer. Before leaving out the door for school, another prayer. When they return home from school, someone prays again. Then, every evening, there is prayer service.
Everyone gathers together to sing songs, worship, tell Bible stories, and pray. And when the kids pray, they pray. Like child prayer warriors. They take turns leading the prayer service and the leader says, “1, 2, 3, start!” They all start praying, out loud, all at once, shouting out their prayers, and will continue praying until told to stop.
And the verses they memorize would put most adults to shame! Every week they work on memorizing a new verse to recite in Sunday school. Even the ones as young as three, memorize them. Once a week they have a talent show and some of them will recite up to twenty verses at a time!
Growing up in this kind of environment provides a great foundation for them to live in this harsh world knowing who they are in Christ and what they stand for.
To them, Jesus is their superhero. They may not understand all the theology behind it but they believe that Jesus is their Savior, and that’s what matters. Their childlike faith is beautiful to Jesus. This whole neighborhood knows that’s what this place stands for because the presence of God shines so brightly from it. It’s been a blessing to be in this place this month and spend time with the people here.
