I can’t believe I am about to head into my fourth month on the race. It doesn’t seem real, I have been dreaming about this trip for so long and I am already a quarter of the way through it! Time is flying by and I have really been noticing things lately that have just become part of every day life for me. I have also realized little things that we in Canada become accustomed to that I am so grateful for and that I miss. There really are so many things that we are blessed to have access to that don’t exist in abundance on this side of the world. Here is a few things that have become my new normal, I hope you enjoy!
You know you are on the World Race when…
- Sleeping on any type of bed excites you
- Hot water and pressure amazes you
- 6 hr bus rides don’t phase you
- You compare sleeper buses
- You wear the same outfit multiple days in a row and don’t get judged for it
- You always include toilet paper in your bag, or steel napkins in case you need it later
- Squatty potties don’t make you cringe
- You quit asking what food you are eating
- Discussing bodily functions become a part of every day conversations
- Your hurry up and wait game is strong
- You take selfies and pictures with hundreds of locals
- You are always converting currencies
- You finally get comfortable somewhere, but then it is time to pack up and leave again
- You pay $5 for one meal and you can’t believe how expensive that is
- Worldracetbh actually resonates with you
- You get hit with a stomach bug on travel days and have to ask the driver to stop so you can utilize the side of the road (pocket toilet paper comes in handy)
- Alone time means putting ear phones in and shutting your eyes
- Team time is the last thing you want to do that day
- Schedules never go according to plan
- Community living is the hardest thing you have ever had to do, but it is also one of the best parts of the race
- When you have eaten rice for almost every meal
- You show up to minsitry and it is nothing like the spreadsheet said
- You are consistently surrounded by a loving, God-fearing community
- You are pushed out of your comfort zone daily
- Squishing your whole team and packs into a small car is always a nice challenge
- You buy a new shirt and everyone knows it
- You get a new shirt off the free table and everyone wants to know where you got it
- You pay to get your laundry done
- You invite people to peel your sunburn
- Crossing the street becomes a game
- When cows are pets not food
- You go without a shower for a few days
- Baby wiping is considered a shower
- You have a love-hate relationship with feedback
- You can’t go to the bathroom without getting your feet wet
- You are learning and growing in so many different areas
