We made it to our final continent of the race and what better way to start off our ninth month of ministry by attending a wedding!
It is so much fun getting to dive into different cultures and it is extremely special to get to experience a celebration. Weddings are different in every country and it has been a blessing to get to now experience two weddings over the course of the race.
We came to find out that this was a white wedding, which is extra special in this culture. A white wedding is when the bride and groom stay pure. The officiator said it was officially a white wedding because they had white people show up. There was no way we could blend in.
As we arrived at the wedding, everyone wanted to greet us. The church was already filled, but because we were white they told people to leave so we could have a seat. This is the worst part about being white and going to a special event. We didn’t even know the bride yet we got the special seating. We stood out like a bunch of giraffes.
It got even more noticeable once we arrived at the reception. Some of us were brought to a table at the very front. This was really cool as we got front row seats to see the bridal party come in. This was super cool to experience. The bridal party puts together a choreographed dance and perform it as they enter the reception. This dance probably went on for about 10 min. Dancing and singing is a huge part of this culture and it was cool to see them implement that into such a big celebration. Due to having white people at the wedding, they decided to pull us all up to dance in front of all the guests. We weren’t up there long and we might have made a fool of ourselves, I definitely can’t dance like the Africans, but it was a fun way to end our time at the wedding.
See if you can spot the giraffes at the wedding in these pictures below!
