I made it to Malaysia… “BARELY” -Bob from What About Bob. It has become on going joke that I am the worst traveler ever. I’m the type that would loose an entire wallet (including passport, debit cards, yellow book, and all forms of ID). However, I am also the type of person that, by the actual grace of God, would have their entire wallet returned to them by some random, extremely kind, stranger.
Ministry, since in Malaysia, has been incredibly different compared to the last 2 months. I would argue that ministry is an all day thing for us. There isn’t really a beginning or an end to our ministry schedule. It is very go with the flow and forces you to be quick on your toes. It also really forces you to fight for that one-on-one time with Jesus. For myself, it has recently been in the morning and again in mid afternoon (only He knows that I NEED it). God and I are on quite a journey right now and He has called me into something that is making my life very challenging at the moment. I can’t speak (literally) on this yet, but believe me, I will tell you all about it when I get the chance. I’m learning a lot about myself. I’m learning a lot about the people around me. That’s all I’m going to say on the matter.
Food in Malaysia is insanely good. I think one of my teammates said it best, “I’m going to get fat”. It’s a melting pot between Indian food, Chinese food. Malay food, and some American food. Right across the street from our hostel, I can get some of the best cheese naan on the planet. To the right of our hostel, I can get brownies and ice cream (or anything American and ding dangy delicious). To the left of our hostel, I can get some BOMB samosas. If you walk past the street with the samosas, you can get to the best noodle place ever (they make all of their own noodles). That’s all I’m going to say on the matter.
Hostel life has been a dream. I’m in a room with my team. We have A/C and we have bathrooms that work and our ministry hosts are amazing and fantastic. Our hostel has this insane rooftop where we are able to go whenever we need to. The view from the roof is basically a 360 view of the entire island (I’m exaggerating). It has become my favorite spot to nap. I go and just lay on the ground and I put a chair on top of myself (I dont know). That’s all I’m going to say on the matter.
Team Alithinos has lice. It started with one of us and then we realized that we all have it. Some of the guys have longer hair and they will not come near any of us. I respect it. We think we got it either form the bus that we rode on to get here or from the girls from our past ministry. Two of my team members shaved their heads. Not because of the lice, however. They shaved their heads to find their beauty in Jesus and within themselves. I respect it (so dang much). My team has been a rock for me the past week. Letting me lean on them when I need them and treating my hair for lice. I would like to argue that I have been a rock for them too. Ex: One of my teammates fell in the shower and busted her elbow open, I am the only one that seemed to care at the time. I was later told that they all assumed that because I was screaming, I was just being dramatic (as per usual). I was being dramatic. I respect it. That’s all I’m going to say on the matter.
Personally, Jesus and I have a very “call and response” type of relationship as of now. It’s amazing. It’s hard. Many times I dont want to hear what He is telling me to do. I’m currently in a grace period with Him. Giving Him all control and anything that might make me think that I have control. He is teaching me that when I actually am quite and listen, He speaks and fights my battles for me. In Exodus 14:14, God Himself says, “The Eternal will fight on your behalf while you watch back in silence”. That’s all I’m going to say on the matter.
