5/2/11 Saturday (Ecuador Day 2. World Race Day 30)

Our second day at Quito with the whole squad staying in one big house. Since it was our off day we went back to central Quito and went to a cathedral called ‘Basiica del Voto Nacional’. It is set on a hill and we got quite a workout trying to get there. It’s worth it though, because It is soooo pretty. For $2 entrance fee, you can go up the bell tower and the tower (78.23m height) of the cathedral. The view is incredible and you are literally at the top of
the tower. There are gargoyles all around the outside of the building which is
pretty cool. Definitely a must-visit if you ever come to Quito.
Extremely hilly Quito gave us a good workout just trying to get to the Basilica.
The Basilica
Another view of the Basilica. Isn’t it gorgeous?

These are the two bell towers where you can climb up to the top and get an amazing view of the city.

View from the bell tower.

To get to the tower, you have to walk across this scary plank, and climb up many narrow metal steps.

From the tower, you look across and see the bell tower.

The main hall inside the church.

It so happened that there was a wedding of an old couple happening that day. How cool! I took a video of the whole wedding procession. Haha.

Beautiful stained glass windows.

6/2/11 Sunday (Ecuador Day 3. World Race Day 31)

We left in the morning from the house we were staying in
Quito to go to our contact’s church southeast of Quito. I cannot begin to describe
how blessed I was to be at the church. I could hear praises coming out from the
church, and when we stepped in, we were greeted by people singing and dancing
and praising God. It was so alive! I had been inside a Spanish-speaking church
before and it was always hard to praise God because I didn’t know the words to
the songs or what they mean. But today I prayed and asked God to remove this
language barrier, that I would be able to praise Him even in this situation.
God is good. Right after I prayed this, I just felt the Holy Spirit ministering
to me and I was praising God despite the language barrier. We REALLY can praise
God in all languages even if we don’t know it.

(Side note: One of the students in the school we are working at asked me one day if God speaks to me in Chinese when he found out that I speak Chinese, because he says that God speaks to him in Spanish. Haha… So cute! I replied: God speaks all languages!)

Praise the Lord!
