We’ve been in the country of Honduras for exactly one week now and we’ve experienced a lot in such a short time. I invite you to join our journey and take a glimpse into what we’ve been up to over the past 7 days…
November 10th
– [in Antigua] wake up at 3:45am for departure at 4, but the bus doesn’t arrive until 5
– Cross the Guatemala-El Salvador border around 9:30am
– Drive across El Salvador: it appears very green, very hot and a little bit cleaner and more advanced than Guatemala
– Arrive at the El Salvador-Honduras border around 4pm and wait on the bus for an hour
– Drive 4 hours to the capital city of Tegucigalpa and transfer all of our stuff (50+ people) onto a crowded school bus for half an hour
Total travel time = 15.5 hours
Tony is an incredible American man who has lived in Honduras for many years. Him and his wife care for children in unfortunate situations and have just opened a Christian retreat centre. Their focus is on relationships and they have welcomed us with wide open arms. We’ve set our tent up in a big open room to be safe from the snakes outside and to have privacy amidst our 50 squad mates. All of us are sharing one bathroom with 3 toilets and 2 showers. Some local women volunteer to cook our meals and we are eating authentic Honduran food which includes a lot of beans and deep fried tortillas.
November 12th
– Wake up at 7:30am for a freezing cold shower
– Field trip to “La Tigra National Park” for amazing views of the city, to see a giant Jesus statue and pray for the country

November 13th
– Church at “Mi Viña” (My Vine) from 9:30-12:30
– I was asked to speak at the front and introduce our team in Spanish as we were broadcast on their national television channel. We felt very welcomed and honoured as the entire church was excited to meet us.
– My lice discovery…my wonderful husband and amazing friend Dan spend hours picking lice and eggs out of my hair. I think I had had it for about a week at this point.
November 14th
– Our first day of ministry: the boys paint at “Mi Vina” and the girls go to a non for profit called ” Leaders without borders” for an introduction to their organization
November 15th
– Boys = more painting, Girls = shopping for toy donations for impoverished children at Christmas and delivery at a local newspaper office
November 16th
– Data entry at “Leaders without borders” to input lists of volunteers and contact information on computers
– Given free tickets to go to a huge Christian concert “Faros”. It was really awesome to see an excited generation of Honduran youth for the Lord and an honour to pray for them.
So far our ministry in Honduras has been a little bit all over the place. It seems like we will have the chance to experience a lot of different things this month. We are excited to continue to grow in relationships that we are forming with women at the church and the non-profit we’re volunteering with. We are overwhelmed by the generosity and blessings we have received so far and hope that we will be able to return the favour in the coming weeks.
Please consider supporting us and the people of Honduras. We still need $1000 to stay on the race past January. You can still support us monthly or give a one-time donation online, via cheque or through Orillia Community Church (Canadians will receive a tax-deductible receipt). Americans will receive a tax-deductible receipt from Adventures in Missions.
