During our second part of the month we were asked to paint the walls of the church. The walls of the church needed a new paint job so we could see why we were asked to paint them. The rooms that we painted the first week were the rooms downstairs where they did children ministry. One of the rooms had large foam objects and some old toys for the younger ones and the others just had some tables and chairs.
So like I have done in the past the first thing that we needed to do was to scrape all the old peeling paint off the wall. We spent most of the first day doing this and went a little overboard with the scraping. The next thing that we did that I was not expecting to do was putty all the holes in the walls that were there. We quickly learned that scraping to much means more work later on. Every other time on the race I have painted we have never used putty to fix the holes we just painted right over them. So then then we had to let the putty dry and then do a second coat on top of that one. After that was done we had to sand down the putty. Once that was done was starting painting. The paint was very watery and when we rolled it on the wall we got little blobs of paint all over the floor of the rooms and the hall that we painted. We also did not have painters tape, just regular white tape about a ½ inch wide. After that was done we did a second coat of paint to all the areas that needed it. As we were painting I found a small air bubble on the stairs leading to the rooms that we were painting , and a small bubble quickly became a big area that needed to be painted so that was added to our work load. The last day was just cleaning up the paint spots on the floor that we had to scrape and use a wet rag to remove, it was slow going but we got it all done in one day. We managed to finish just as our work week was coming to an end.
During the last week with our host for the month we were asked to paint 2 more rooms. The room that we were sleeping in and the room where we ate all our meals. So we did what we did before, scrape, putty, sand, paint and paint again. The process went much faster since the rooms were much simpler to paint. We also were asked to paint a mural on the wall so we picked a map of the world that was drawn with only straight lines.
We also went to a new location later that week that was working on a roof for a church. The guys helped place the parts into where they were going to be welded. We only had 2 days there so we did not get all the parts finished so we helped them bring them down from the top floor to the bottom floor via a hole that let you see the first floor. The ladies had to clean and paint the meatal that was being used to make it.
