I realized this morning, that for the first time since I was probably 12 or 13, I don’t have any keys. I don’t own a single key to anything.
No Car.
No Apartment.
No Office.
No Mailbox.
It’s actually kind of terrifying. Giving everything up. Not having anything to run to for shelter. Not having anything to escape to. Not having anything to fall back on. Although, it’s actually kind of incredible. Not having anything to run to for shelter, but God. Not having anything to escape to, but God. Not having anything to fall back on, but God.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth…but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…” (Matthew 6:19-20)
We know what this verse means. We understand it…but are we really living it? Is our temporary time on this earth really worth the effort of prosperity? When you make lots of money, build a big house, and travel the world, what will you have gained? Will you feel fulfilled? Was it really worth it?
Jesus had those things, and He thought we were worth giving them up.
He left His glory. He left His throne in Heaven. For us.
“Jesus made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:6-8)
Sorry for being blunt, but did Jesus really die for us to live a stagnant life? Do you know what happens to water that is stagnant? It grows moss and bacteria. It becomes undrinkable. It becomes poison. It’s worthless.
Whether you are a starving college student, or an established professional in the workforce, give up your keys! Stop living to grow your assets, and start living to grow the Kingdom! Maybe you want to, but you don’t know how. You don’t need to know how. Stop waiting for it to make sense. It’s never going to make sense. It didn’t make sense for Noah to build the ark, but the rain came. It didn’t make sense for Moses, who stuttered, to lead an entire nation of people, but they followed him.
There is a cost to following Jesus: Life-abandonment.
There is a reward to following Jesus: Jesus.
“God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.” (Ephesians 3:20)
Give up your keys.
Funding Update: I am 50% funded. I need to raise another $7,500 by December. I can’t do this alone, but we can do this as a team, as a body of believers. While I am the one physically traveling, there is another aspect of this journey, and that is you! Missions is not possible without a team of supporters. Please consider partnering with me and changing this world for Christ! You can donate by clicking the ‘Please Support Me’ button on the upper left side of this page.
