Looking for a travel spot you’ve never thought of before? Try Myanmar!

If you are travelling in South East Asia, and looking for a unique adventure, Myanmar is a great option to check out!
1. Myanmar or Burma?
Once known by the countries old name Burma, the people here take great pride in going by the countries new name, Myanmar.2. Don’t expect all people to look the same.
It’s a common misconception with some cultures that one person looks like the next person, but this isn’t completely true. There are many different ethnicities and tribes within the Myanmar culture.3. Shopping:
Don’t let the number on the price tag give you sticker shock! Eating and shopping is much cheaper than you might think! A good, inexpensive meal can be found for as little as $2,500 MMK (Only $1.84 USD!)4. Water:
Is controlled and rationed out by the government to residents everyday, so it can be very limited in some places, but there is usually more than enough for day to day needs.5. Thanaka:
A VERY popular face cream here that almost every person wears! Noticeable mainly on peoples cheeks, the Burmese use it as protection from the sun and to lighten their skin.6. Umbrellas:
Used by many people here and they’re not just for protection from rain! Quite the opposite, they’re mostly used for protection from the sun.7. Longyi’s:
The preferred garment of Myanmar, and can be seen being worn by males and females alike. They are cylindrical in shape, similar to a skirt or a sarong.8. Basic phrases:
- Mingalaba – Hello
- Jezutinbadeh – Thank you
- Ein tha – Toilet (Important to know, but you can also just say ‘toilet‘ and usually be pointed in the right direction)
9. Popular foods:
- Mohinga – Rice and Noodle Fish/Chicken Soup. Many locals will recommend this! I personally loved the chicken!
- Prawn Crackers – Exactly what it sounds like – crackers with a prawn flavoring
- Laphet – Pickled Tea Leaves
- RICE!! – Did I even need to tell you this one would be on here?? Rice lovers unite! There is never a shortage!
- Green Tea – Served at many restaurants for free with meals
- Tamarind Flakes – A slightly sweet, after dinner treat in the shape of a small disc
10. Be aware – There are Malaria carrying mosquitos in some areas.
Take some time and do your research on the area you’re going to. Your doctor or local travel clinic will be a huge help and can recommend a prescription before you go.11. Monks:
Like most people in Myanmar, Monks are generally friendly. Take note! It is considered very disrespectful to touch a Monk, even just in passing as they then consider themselves ‘unclean’. Best practice is to give them as much space as possible and they will do the same for you. Monks can be easily identified by the maroon colored robes they wear.12. Take a second look!
Many great little restaurants and cafe’s are easily missed by many because of how busy the streets can be. Most establishments are very clean and trendy on the inside.
13. Street Food:
