Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4
God really spoke to me about this passage during a time of worship in a small church in Rwanda. Its really hard to explain but the spirit of God is actually heavy in this place, his presence is in the church because people are hungry for him. God feeds those who are hungry.
So many times we think we understand what our heart desires. Things like comfort, security, family, and an easier life seem to be at the top of our list. God says if we delight in him then he will give us our desires, so does this mean by simply delighting in him he will give us what we want? You see I think most of us are really confused about what our hearts actually desire. The Heart is deceitful above all things (Jeremiah 17:9). I have heard it said that every person has a place inside of them that can only be filled by Jesus Christ. I know people with everything that the world offers and yet their lives are empty and full of heartbreak. SO obviously what we often think will fulfill our lives actually falls short.
What is God saying to us then? What can we learn from this passage? Here in Africa people who believe in Christ are for the most part consumed with him. What I mean is they have no problem rising up early to pray, or going to church each night to worship and dig into his word. I think often times we feel that if we spend hours praying, in the word, and in worship that we will become bored. I would like to suggest that it is just the opposite. If we devote every part of our lives to God, if we delight ourselves in him, we will be filled to overflowing! It is not that we need more worldly things to help us have peace, we need more of the prince of peace, Jesus Christ!
When we delight ourselves in the Lord he gives us the TRUE desire of our hearts, he gives us himself. Every single person who has ever lived on this earth has an internal desire to know and be known by Jesus! God promises if we lose our lives we will actually find them. If we lay down every earthly desire and follow him we will find true life. Any other life apart from complete abandonment to Jesus is not the life to the full that Jesus has promised. Today I challenge you to delight yourself in the Lord, and fulfill your hearts true desire. God’s blessings to all of you!
