World Race parent Kristen Duckstein started a Non-profit business called Social Revolution. Their mission is to glorify God by guiding kids and young adults socially, educationally, and faithfully. They will provide a safe environment to give 12-20 year olds somewhere to go to intermingle and build social skills without depending on technology. Here is her story.
When my kids were teens, over 15 years ago, they were always asking “What can I do?” on a Friday/Saturday night.
About a year ago, I was speaking with my daughter, who was a future racer, and we were discussing how there are not many places for young people to go. Other than church youth groups, there were just not places for kids that are inexpensive and safe. We also discussed the issue that it is difficult to connect with them because so many young people are attached to their phones. With technology being such a prominent part of today’s society, young people are more and more dependent on their phones rather than socializing face to face with their peers. We realized there is a lack in society of providing them a space and actually teaching/encouraging them to socialize with one another.
I was still not convinced that I could do this, but God kept sending me signs to push forward. A big push came from the speaker at Parent Launch who told us to make our own story so that when our Racer comes back ours is as good if not even better than theirs.
Our solution is to provide a coffee shop atmosphere with an area for games such as pool tables, air hockey, and board games. We also will schedule entertainment for them to enjoy such as trivia nights, magicians, and comedians. Going a step further, we will provide workshops to teach life skills such as internet safety, budgeting, time management, and even have some motivational speakers. Social groups can then meet to strategize on how to put these life skills they have learned into their everyday lives. In addition, we will offer support groups for difficult issues these age groups are facing today.
We have gotten our nonprofit status from our state for Social Revolution, and I am applying this week for our 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. We are currently looking for a space to rent, and have a deadline to be open within a year, but would love to start this fall!
