For the past month, I have been volunteering at Camp Hope. Camp hope is a special needs & disabilities facility run by an orphanage (which is where many of the kids come from). There are different rooms that we volunteer in along with cleaning. We rotate who cleans each day. It’s not the most glorifying job, but often times that’s when God most clearly speaks to me. I started our last week at Camp Hope by cleaning. While I was cleaning what Lucia told me to & jamming out to my music, I saw this framed poem. It’s been there since our first day. I had just never slowed down enough to notice it. I encourage everyone to take the time to read this because it truly brought tears to my eyes and continues to do so.

A meeting was held quite far from earth

“It’s time again for another birth.”

Said the angels of the Lord above.

“This special child will need much love,

his progress may seem very slow;

accomplishments he may not show.

And he’ll require much extra care

from all the folks he meets down there.

He may not laugh or run or play;

his thoughts may seem quite far away.

In many ways, he won’t adapt,

and he’ll be known as ‘handicapped’.

So let’s be careful where he’s sent.

We want his life to be content.

Please, Lord, find the parents who

will do this special job for you.

They will not realize right away

the leading role they’re asked to play.

But with the child from above,

comes stronger faith and richer love.

and soon they’ll know the privilege given in caring for this gift from heaven –

Their special child so meek and mild

is “Heaven’s Very Special Child.”

I got a glimpse of the love this poem is talking about. Every child there touched my heart and it was a gift to be able to love them in this short amount of time.
