As one of my fundraisers for my trip, I am selling t-shirts. The company I used to design my shirts, Fund the Nations, creates unique designs for individual fundraisers. Since I had this shirt designed especially for me, I’d like to explain a little bit of the meaning behind the design and why I chose Hebrews 12:1, which reads:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”

The previous chapter of Hebrews lists the “great cloud of witnesses” referenced in this verse. It talks about faith being “confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” and commends people like Abel, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and many others who displayed great faith. Hebrews 12:1 encourages us to follow in their footsteps and to cast off anything that serves as a barrier to wholeheartedly following God’s calling for our lives. It prompts us to step out in faith, and trust that God has incredible things in store that we may or may not see fulfilled in our own lifetimes as our own stories are woven into the grander Gospel narrative.

It is my hope that as I prepare for and participate in the World Race, that I can let go of the things that serve as barriers to my own faith and that I can wholeheartedly follow God into whatever He calls me to do prior to, during, and after the Race so that my story can be woven into God’s narrative of His faithfulness and love for us.
