At debrief, we had the chance to have one on ones with different people on our leadership team. I chose to take full advantage of this time to get to know leadership and talk through different thoughts. One of my one on ones was with Cami Ramon. She’s an alumni team leader for another team and is super sweet. She was having one on ones to help people discover their core values. Finding out your core values can help you understand why you believe so strongly about certain things and help explain some of your actions and thoughts. The values can either be ones you already see you have in your life or values you wish to grow in.
To do this, you sort through a big pile of values splitting it into two piles of “this is me” and “I don’t think this is me.” You keep going through the pile until you have about 20 values left. Once you have your 20 values, you sort that pile into five categories by how your thoughts pair the words together. There’s no right or wrong answer, you just do it how you believe it works in your brain. With those five categories, you pick one word from each group that sort of acts like the “umbrella” over all the other words. Those five “umbrella” words are your core values.
I really enjoyed doing this activity. It brought up new insights and put words to things I already knew about myself. I want to share with you my five core values, so you can get to know me better and, in some cases, challenge me to grow deeper in my values if you ever see fit to do so. With each value I am going to share the dictionary definition, define it in more Biblical terms, write a few sentences about how I see this as a core value in my life, and put a few Bible verses to it. Hope you enjoy!

Family
-
Definitions
-
Dictionary- A group consisting of parents and children living together in a household
-
Biblical- Family was created with an emphasis on looking after and caring for one another
-
Family is a core value in my life because I understand the importance of being there for one another. I love being around my family and creating memories with them. As a core value, I want it to be known that I am always available and ready to help my family whether we are blood related or not.
-
Bible Verses
-
Genesis 2:20-25- This is the first time in the Bible where God created Eve for Adam to be his suitable helper and the importance of family began
-
Psalm 133:1 “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.”
-
Joy
-
Definitions
-
Dictionary- A feeling of great pleasure and happiness
-
Biblical- Rick Warren, a Pastor, says “Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life, the quiet confidence that ultimately everything is going to be alright, and the determined choice to praise God in every situation.”
-
I really like the way Rick Warren said the definition of Joy. It truly explains why I value having joy in my life so much. I believe it is very important to always find the joy in your life and the positive of each day even if some days are harder than others and give all the glory to God. He gives us joy daily even when it doesn’t seem like that.
-
Bible Verses
-
Ecclesiastes 9:7 “Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do”
-
1 Peter 1:8-9 “Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
-
Patience
-
Definitions
-
Dictionary- The capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset
-
Biblical- The virtue of patience is presented as either self-control or endurance. Also not giving way to anger even in the face of provocation
-
Being patient is something I strongly value and want to always be working on. I believe patience is important because when someone is patient with someone or something, it often turns out so much better than what it would have if it’d been rushed. Patience is key and usually brings more understanding between people.
-
Bible Verses
-
Ephesians 4:2 “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”
-
Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
-
Isaiah 40:31 “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
-
Respect
-
Definitions
-
Dictionary- A feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements
-
Biblical- To place a great value or high price on something
-
I grew up learning how to respect others, and since then, it’s been a big value in my life. Showing others respect, whether you think they’ve earned it or not, shows the love Jesus has for all of us. I value this because it plays a huge part in making sure people know they are loved.
-
Bible Verses
-
Philippians 2:3 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourself.”
-
Romans 12:10 “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”
-
Titus 2:7 “In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity”
-
Strength
-
Definitions
-
Dictionary- The quality or state of being physically strong OR the capacity of an object or substance to withstand great force or pressure
-
Biblical- Comes from a greek word katei meaning power, strength, might
-
This applies to both my mental and physical strength. Throughout my day, I constantly remind myself to find my strength through Christ no matter how big or small the situation. If I am doing it with Him, it will get done exactly how He wants it to be. I also value physical strength of staying healthy and honoring your body that God has given you.
-
Bible Verses
-
Ephesians 6:10 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.”
-
Mark 14:38 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.”
-
Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”
So there ya have it! Those are my core values. I hope this has helped you learned a little bit about me and the why behind a lot of my decisions in life.
I’d love to hear your thoughts about my values and even some of your own core values in your life. Comment them below or message me if you want to have a deeper conversation! I love you all and am praying blessings and safety over everyone!
