I am heading off to Georgia today. I am driving down with two other Racers from the upper mid-west. They left from the cities at 1 and they'll be here in Eau Claire to pick me up shortly. Training camp will be located in the northern part of Georgia and I will be down there for a week.
I am so excited for it all to begin. I am excited to meet my fello Racers. I am excited because the big trip is almost here. I can feel the excitement building, and I know after this week it will only amp up.
I am excited for how God is going to work. Keep us all in your prayers this week.
One thing for you to ponder:
I will pretty much be outdoors this whole week. (We were told to bring our tent to Georgia.) And while on the race, a lot of my time will be spent in the outdoors. One thing that is inevitable, bugs. There is an certain art to it all. Bug killing that is. Yesterday morning I was out for a run. I had to stop and walk a little bit. That is when it happened. The attack. I was immediately swarmed by what seemed to me like a millions flying insects.
Mosquitoes, horse flies, gnats…. Each one specializes in it's own attack. Mosquitoes you can here coming, sometimes, if they go for your head you hear that iconic annoying little buzz. They are quick little buggers and you have to be fast. A quick slap and it is the end of there demise.
Horse flies, now they are not the brightest bulbs on the bunch. Sometimes I wonder if they even have eyes, they seem to circle and circle and circle. Aerial attack is there specialty. They like to dive bomb too. They are not quick though. But there bit hurts, worst than a mosquitoes. They are slow, which makes them easy targets. One thing I learned is that they are hearty too. One good smack won't do the trick. I found that they can survive such combat. You got to practice the old smack a drag tactic. It gets a little messy, but it will do the trick.
As for gnats. there is no solution. Swatting the air like a mad man is all I got. Best of luck.
Anyway, we will be pestered by these, and probably worst, critters while on the trip. Just passing on my knowledge.
