In America we take a lot of things for granted. For example something as simple as a shower head. We use it everyday and really never think about it. Maybe we’ll think about it when lime builds up or when the pressure really sucks but even then some people pay it no attention.
In America we really take freedom of speech for granted. People talk so much or even yell that all they say has now become background noise to our everyday living. But even yet in America has begun to take freedom of religion for granted. The way people talk about it, represent it, or even interact with it has become chore like; especially with Christianity.
Being in India this month I first hand saw and heard stories of people having to choose from their families, religion, communities, social order, or becoming a follower of Christ. Choosing to leave ones religion to follow Christ is not just an individual decision here. Everyone is impacted by one persons choice. A common story is of men who want to start to follow Christ but they find themselves in difficult situations. They are the only men in their families/ communities who can lead their temple upkeep and sacrifices. If they choose to follow Christ there is no one who can lead their families/ communities in their practices. In our mind that could sound like a great problem bring them all to Christ right? But in reality that leads to shame on the while family and being shunned by the only world that you know.
For women who are secret christians it could mean their life. We got to meet one of those women. As she sat there she had a grace and peace in her but even greater than that was the strength that she held. While her husband is away she will have prayer at her house, hide her bible in the bathroom, and after work (she is a teacher and their hours are crazy long) go to a small group to be discipled. There have been times when her husband almost discovered her secret putting her in jeopardy.
In india its not just a simple decision. The choice to leave behind their gods to follow Christ means that they are challenging every aspect of life here.
En América damos muchas cosas por sentado. Por ejemplo, algo tan simple como un cabezal de ducha. Lo usamos todos los días y realmente nunca lo pensamos. Tal vez lo pensaremos cuando se acumule cal o cuando la presión realmente apesta, pero incluso entonces algunas personas no le prestan atención.
En América realmente damos por sentado la libertad de expresión. La gente habla tanto o incluso grita que todo lo que dicen ahora se ha convertido en un ruido de fondo para nuestra vida cotidiana. Pero aún en Estados Unidos ha comenzado a darse por sentado la libertad de religión. La forma en que la gente habla, lo representa o incluso interactúa con él se ha vuelto una tarea rutinaria; Especialmente con el cristianismo.
Estando en la India este mes, vi y escuché de primera mano historias de personas que tenían que elegir entre sus familias, religión, comunidades, orden social o convertirse en seguidores de Cristo. Elegir dejar las religiones para seguir a Cristo no es solo una decisión individual aquí. Todos son impactados por la elección de una persona. Una historia común es la de los hombres que quieren comenzar a seguir a Cristo, pero se encuentran en situaciones difíciles. Son los únicos hombres en sus familias / comunidades que pueden dirigir el mantenimiento y los sacrificios del templo. Si eligen seguir a Cristo, no hay nadie que pueda guiar a sus familias / comunidades en sus prácticas. En nuestra mente, eso podría sonar como un gran problema, llevarlos a todos a Cristo, ¿verdad? Pero en realidad eso lleva a avergonzar a la familia del tiempo y ser rechazado por el único mundo que conoces.
Para las mujeres que son cristianas secretas podría significar su vida. Tenemos que conocer a una de esas mujeres. Mientras se sentaba allí, tenía gracia y paz en ella, pero incluso más que eso era la fuerza que tenía. Mientras su esposo está ausente, ella orará en su casa, esconderá su biblia en el baño y después del trabajo (ella es maestra y sus horas son muy largas) van a un pequeño grupo para ser discipuladas. Ha habido ocasiones en que su marido casi descubrió su secreto poniéndola en peligro.
En la India no es solo una simple decisión. La elección de dejar atrás a sus dioses para seguir a Cristo significa que están desafiando todos los aspectos de la vida aquí.
