This past week for ministry we built a compost house, or (as Sammy calls it) a “compost home”. When I heard my first project was going to be constuction, I was SO excited to be doing something I knew how to do. I soon learned the work environment here is wildly different than what I’m used to. I became frustrated with the pace, lack of tools, and different materials quickly.
We spent the first four days of this project drilling into bamboo, digging holes, tying rusty wire, and making a lot of mistakes. There were many times I asked God “What’s the point of all this? Why are we doing it this way? Is there a lesson here?” On the fifth day, time flew by. The team I was with worked hard and worked fast. It finally felt like we had a rythm! After a week of week of learning new methods and handling new frustrations, the Lord brought me to the conclusion that just because it’s not efficient doesn’t mean it’s not right.
By the end of day 5 we had finished. I walked away from the week with my hand cut up and my body sore. More importantly I walked away with a greater knowledge of the culture of work here, and a lesson of patience from the Lord.
