My first year of college I was in one of those classes that supposed to teach you how to write.  We read The Odyssey
and each class the teacher would tell us to summarize the next two
chapters by the following class.  The first time he told us to do it in
like 500 words.  Not a lot of words, but we made it happen.  Then he
told us to do it in 200, then 150, then 75, then 50.  Eventually the
professor had us summarizing two chapters of The Odyssey in a couple of sentences.

Obviously the point wasn’t to write an exhaustive summary.  The
point was to learn how to edit.  We learned not to use a lot of
adjectives.  We learned how to combine sentences, and we learned how to
trim out non-essential details.

We’ve covered some good resources the last few weeks to help you find your voice on your blog.  A few of you have started to post on your personal sites.  I think editing is a huge key to writing, especially on a blog.

Most of the time I open up a World Race blog and if I have
to scroll too far to see the end, I’ll just close it.  We’ve got hundreds
of folks on the field, I can usually find another one that says
basically the same thing in fewer words.  I try not to post anything on my
personal blog that’s more than 750 words.  My last several have been
more around 500 and I really like that length.

I know everything usually seems pretty big emotionally, but when you post, try to boil it down to the most important stuff.

HAPPY BLOGGING!

More exciting than urging you to edit blogs, I got an email the
other day about a discount code that a woman in our office worked out on
backcountry.com.

On the facebook group I mentioned one of the women on my squad
had worked out a deal with backcountry before my Race.  Well that same
woman now works here in the admissions office and has done the same
thing again.
