Insurance FAQs for Parents of World Racers

These FAQs are to help Parents of World Racers better understand the IMG/MissionSafe insurance policy Adventures in Missions purchases on behalf of Racers, as well as the way we communicate information related to insurance and medical issues while on the field.

Questions not answered here can be addressed to MissionSafe at [email protected] .

How does International travel insurance work?

What is Adventures in Missions’ role in regard to insurance?
Adventures in Missions purchases an insurance policy for each Racer through MissionSafe and IMG. Because Adventures in Missions is not the insurance company/provider, the insurance policy holder will need to contact IMG for specific insurance questions and information related to his or her specific situation. (In order for IMG to release claim activity for a specific policy holder to another person, the policyholder will first need to sign the Privacy and Confidentiality Release Form . Without this form, IMG and MissionSafe will not be able to share information with others including family members.)

What is MissionSafe? What is IMG?
MissionSafe is our insurance broker, and International Medical Group (IMG) is our insurance provider.

Do Racers need to keep a domestic health insurance policy in place?
Because a number of factors impact this decision, you should contact MissionSafe at [email protected] , your insurance provider and/or your tax advisor.

How can I get my Racer’s insurance policy information?
Your Racer has been given insurance information throughout their application and mobilization process, and the insurance policy can be found on their profile. We can provide the general policy document; however, we do ask that Racers communicate specific insurance information with you.

An overview of the policy can be found here: www.missionsafe.com/aim/ The policy document is a link toward the bottom (on the left).

In the case of sickness or illness, a Racer will need to submit insurance claims – unless he or she asks a parent to do that on their behalf. A Racer’s Squad Leader and Squad Mentor are resources and can help walk the Racer through the process.

Please coordinate with your Racer before contacting the insurance company about specific coverage in a medical situation. Often times, World Race is already in that process, and parent calls to the insurance company can confuse or delay the process.

Who is “taking care of” or “looking out for” my Racer if he/she gets sick?
While World Race team members do look out for each other, we ask Racers to notify their leaders when they do not feel well and want to see a doctor. And if a Racer is sick for more than 48 hours, we ask that they go to the doctor. While this protocol is in place, it is the Racer’s responsibility to follow it.

If a Racer gets sick and is taken to the hospital, the Squad Leader (on the field) and the Squad Mentor (in the office) are notified. They communicate with the Racer throughout the hospitalization and follow up with the Racer for any discharge or further treatment plans.

World Race leaders assist Racers in getting the help they need on the field, but again, Racers must make leaders aware of any issues as they arise.

Will Adventures in Missions contact me if my Racer gets sick or injured while on the World Race?
When a Racer is able to communicate, we leave the decision of whom to contact with the Racer. The Squads have access to emergency phones that are not Internet dependent, so if a Racer would like to contact home and does not have access to wifi, a phone can be made available.

If a Racer is unable to communicate, the Racer’s emergency contacts will be notified. The Racer fills out the emergency contact information on his/her WR application; it is not always the Racer’s parents.

Because Racers are legal adults, we are limited in the health and medical information we are able to communicate and share – even with parents.

What if I need to submit claims on behalf of my Racer?
Anyone can submit claims; however, in order for IMG to release information to you regarding those claims, your Racer will need to have signed the Privacy and Confidentiality Release Form (which is the last page of the claim form).

Information on submitting claims can be found under the Important Documents section at the bottom of www.missionsafe.com/aim/

Here are a few general highlights/reminders of the claims process:

  • ?  Seek medical treatment overseas

  • ?  Pre-certify major treatment or test (i.e. surgery, MRIs, etc.)

  • ?  Gather documents, receipts, and information

  • ?  Submit a claim within 90 days of the incident

  • ?  Remember “If they’re [IMG] gonna pay, they want a say.”

  • ?  Travel Medical insurance is primarily a reimbursement policy. They do

have direct billing relationships with some hospitals and will make a guarantee of payment when deemed necessary.
