PORTO GALERTO = AMAZING!

We’ve settled in our little community which just so happens to be nestled in the mountains. Also it’s a mere 5 minute walk to the beach.

Who could ask for a better place be? It really has been a blessing to be on the island. I can say without much reservation that I was made for the islands. The simplified life is definatly something I could adjust to with no fight. Its mostly really hot here and rains in the afternoon or evening. Life here is interesting. Western society tells us to work and work hard. Typically that’s not a bad thing. Here in this community of Threads of Hope, Pastor Al is more concerned with relationship. He wants you to know Jesus and have a relationship with Him. So its been a bit of a struggle with my team (Hepzibah) and the other team here with us (Team Deep Roots). We struggle with just being verses doing. It is however making us be creative and communicate with Pastor Al. Above all we want Pastor Al to know we are here for him to do projects he needs done and also learning how to partner with him in building relationships with this community. It’s beautiful to watch a bunch of crazy white Americans learn how to let go of this work mentality. We are all growing for sure. We are learning how to EMBRACE this new way of life.

The Do’s and Don’ts so far:

Don’t flush toilet paper. (we have toilets however running water here is not good. Pipes can’t handle it so don’t flush it!)

Don’t pet the dogs. (pretty much every dog has mange or is ridden with flees…gross!)

Always say ‘hello’ when the 20 kids yell ‘HI’ at you

Always hug when being approached by 5 women. (they Love it!)

Always chase the chickens…well its just fun!

Always dance in the rain…mostly because its funny to watch people stare at you from their houses

When you hear a loud noise..DUCK AND RUN! It’s a cocanut falling from the tree.

Always ask people what they have pets…we did and we got a monkey named Moy Moy. ITS AWESOME!

So friends my birthday was awesome. We hiked to a waterfall, cleaned out a gully, moved heavy rocks from a snake ridden cliff, and had cake! From what I can gather our ministry here will be what we make of it. Playing games with the kids, leading worship, leading morning devotions, learning how to make braclets, or helpingwith random projects the Pastor Al has for us. These woman are amazing. Ive never experience such servanthood as I have with them. All you who bought a braclet; your money went to something great. I don’t get internet very often here (mom or nana or whoever could put $$$ in my checking account and id write more!!! J ) Its like 1 dollar USD to use the internet…im just saying! Hahah. I will write more of the people soon though. Until then Im embracing island life and hopeing I can go spear fishing!!!!
Much Love.
