I absolutely love what God is doing in Phuket, Thailand. Phuket is a small island off South Thailand, known for its tourist atmosphere. The World Race women have split separately from the men on our squad this month, so while the guys are off doing “MAN-istry” in northern Thailand, my girls have joined the ladies from Team Rama and Team New Song!   The 13 of us know God has appointed us for such a time as this.

SHE ministries has been training women in Phuket with life skills, as well as Biblical training, in order to raise up a generation of Thai’s who are in love with God and are making a difference in their own communities. There are 5 women currently working at the Centre, but they’ve had up to 20 at one time working here, earning a certificate in baking, chocolate creations, cooking, or jewelry making and design.   They also have outreach opportunities for the women here, to learn how to help their communities. It’s such a beautiful representation of how the church should function!

Here’s an excerpt from the SHE website:

Started in 2006, SHE (Self Help and Empowerment) is a Christian charity committed to helping women and children at risk in Thailand, many of whom are trapped in the commercial sex trade. SHE is dedicated to providing employment, vocational training and counseling for women who want to help themselves out of this industry. All proceeds go directly to helping them find employment, community, friendship, restoration, and above all restoration of their own value.

Mark, Sharon, and visiting teams spend most nights building relationships with women working in the hundreds of bars in Phuket, Thailand. Once a relationship is established after a few visits, Mark & Sharon share the vision of SHE with the women and let them know that there is a way out: they can have a salaried job making jewelry with SHE if they are interested. The only condition of employment is that they must quit their job at the bar completely.

Here’s a testimony from one of the women who came through SHE ministries:

“I use believe in Buddha, but now I believe in God. He showed me his power and helped me change my life.

[Working in the bar] was hard with my soul, because we have to go with the customer. I am feeling bad, because sometimes we want money and have to go with customer, and that is hard. But when we here at SHE we have salary. No money in the bar if I no go with customer – I have no money. Here not a lot of salary but on my soul it feel good. Here- [putting hand over her heart] feel better.

“When working at the bar sometimes sad because we have no customer and we sad- no money no nothing, no friends. I had lot of friend, but not good heart. You can find many friend but no good friend. SHE make me have lot of best friend. Good heart.

This is what this month’s about!!! Pray that God leads the way for our team out on the streets of Patong, and that His joy and love rests at the centre as we lead Bible Studies and interact with the women already at the Center!
