"expectations are the enemy. flexibility is our friend!"

it's one of those cheesy (but true) lines i say repeatedly to the higschool/college age students i take to mazatlan, mexico in the summer. it's a reminder that in another culture, things are different than at home. a reminder that mexicans do not run on the same time schedules and cultural norms that we do. a reminder that sometimes we might be standing in the hot mexican sun painting chairs for 3 hours when we thought the plan was to play indoors with adorable children.

one of my 'assigned blogs' as a world racer is to talk about my expectations for the trip.
keeping in mind that i expect to be flexible…
in the 11 months of the world race, i expect (in no particular order) :

1. to eat a lot of weird/interesting/surprising/maybe gross things. but like i said before, food is my love language.
2. to have fun.
3. to work hard.
4. to cry. a lot.
5. that some days will be filled with home sickness or real sickness.
6. to see God move in ways that i have never in my life experienced before.
7. that my standard of hygiene will change drastically.
8. to be joined with a group of strangers who will quickly become my family.
9. to rejoice/cry/laugh/fight/work/worship/play/rest/pray/eat/share with and love said family.
10. that it will be so incredibly hard yet rewarding.
11. to grow deeper in love with Jesus.
12. to face my own fear/dissapointment/grief/anxiety/sickness/impatience/selfishness/pride in real community.
13. to use a squatty potty. can i be real for a second? this is what i'm most scared of.
14. to bless and be blessed.
15. that i will see isaiah 61:1-4
16. to witness miracles.
17. to leave pieces of my heart all around this beautiful earth.
18. to be deeply changed by what i experience.
19. to meet and build realtionships with incredible people.
20. to regularly be surprised as i see the Lord surpass my expectations.
21. that i will never again be the same.

on another note…while driving to work this morning, i was listening to my fave band (death cab, duh.) and this song reminded me of the world race. ok, let's be real here, everything lately reminds me of the world race.
maybe it's because i've had a burning in my heart to do this for so long!
the video is a little strange, but that's not my fault ok!?
enoy!
