It’s refreshing and enlightening to be in a church culture that relies so much on the leading of the Holy Spirit. One day we gathered for ministry for a “treasure hunt.” We were the hunters and the treasures were the souls of hurting people in need of God’s love. I’ve participated in campus evangelism at CSU, and my mentor at the time will testify that I pretty much hated every second of it. My attitude about this evangelism endeavor was different. I was excited that instead of just picking random people to talk to, we were partnering with the Holy Spirit as our guide.
We started our hunt with an hour with God, seeking on answers on where to go next. When I started my time the word “stars” instantly came to mind. I partnered with my team leader Jacob and we set off with this first clue in mind. When we walked out the building a young man with a star on his cap. We were able to share the gospel and pray with him about 2 minutes into the hunt. After that we prayed more clues and I got the words, “purple blouse, red cap, ambulance, and green eyes.” I’d say we were both a little skeptical, but what else do you have to go off of other than faith in these scenarios? We continued to look for signs of stars and let them be our guide. We passed by a coffee shop with a red star on the door and the woman in the purple blouse was our waiter. It turned out we were in a Christian coffee shop and were able to pray for her. After a nice coffee break we continued on our adventure with stars as our guide. We found them consistently on signs, billboards, t-shirts, motorcycles, and more. We took the stars as a sign that we were going in the right direction. The stars led us to a hospital and I felt like God was telling us that we were the ambulance and we were there to pray for the sick. We were able to enter one room and pray for a couple sick people. We asked the hospital manager if we could pray for more sick people and they said no, so we moved on. We followed the stars on signs and saw the man with the red cap. His cap said “live love” and we took that as a confirmation of our purpose because that’s exactly what we were aiming to do. The man in the cap was a Hindu and we were able to share the gospel with him. He was not receptive, but regardless the seed was planted. As we continued in our journey our faith grew, and the Spirit lead us to a Buddhist temple. We met a young man named Kanchan, who was serving food at the temple. He took us to the top of the temple where we were stunned by an incredible view of Kathmandu valley. We got to know Kanchan and found out that he was a Hindu who was looking for a new life. He said he made a lot of mistakes in his past and was working in the temple to pay back his mom. He thought because of what he did in his past he could not go to heaven. We were able to share the good news that God allows people into heaven not because of what they have done but because they accept his son Jesus. Kanchan accepted Jesus and converted to Christianity right then and there. We gave him a bible, and have continued to meet with him to disciple him in his new faith. The amazing part of this story was that Kanchan has GREEN EYES! We found all the clues and went home satisfied with our journey and overjoyed in our new brother in Christ. We saw a lot of stars that day but the true stars were the people that God led us to, and how he would send two people from halfway around the world just to talk with them. I thought a lot about how in America we usually plan and create a lot of environments for God to move. Creating church programs for God to move in aren’t wrong by any means. But it was miraculous to witness what happened when we asked him what the plans were and operated on his leading.
