I wouldn’t know how interested I would be in Philosophy until freshman year of high school. I took a class called Law Academy which is a 4 year course. The first year we focused on philosophy and ethics. We studied allegories and great philosophers.

On one Sunday morning, I volunteered to be a 6th grade small group leader. The conversation starter was not what you would expect. I asked them, “If nothing is something, then what is nothing?” Somehow this sparked the conversation and ended up asking ourselves deeper questions. What is nothing? Why are we here? Why should I fear God? Was God ever created? All these questions came from 6th graders. I had to give them one more before we left…

“An unexamined life is not worth living” is quoted by Plato (Plato’s Apology). What does this mean exactly? Almost everyone questions the way they live at some point in life. Life without judgement, without the knowledge of the deeds you gain and lose in this life, what are you living for anyway? I believe that Plato is saying that a person who goes throughout life who does not examine their life choices, is dead. “DEAD MAN WALKING”. We must analyze ours deeds, habits, and character. Most importantly we need to learn from our mistakes and take action to move forward. To reexamine or reevaluate is critical to our character. For our thoughts become our deeds, our deeds form our habits, and our habits result in our fixed character, and it is the character we formed in this life that we bring into eternity.

For the past couple of days I have been fixated on Isaiah 6 which is Isaiah’s commission. I learned that before we accept Gods call to speak for him to those around us, we must be cleansed as Isaiah was, confessing our sins and submitting to Gods control. Letting God purify us may be painful, but we must purified so that we can truly represent God, who is pure and holy. We do not need an angel to appear to touch our lips with a coal for our sins to be forgive because Jesus paid for our sins. All we need to do is ask for forgiveness. Grace and mercy will be given.

Have a happy New Years and Roll Tide!!
