Hey Y’all!
It has taken me a little longer than I expected to start my World Race blog. Better late than never, right? As I sit here typing (I’m actually at work haha) I have so many things running through my mind. I don’t know where to start. An about me section should be easy to write. After all who knows you better than yourself… besides God of course. Hmmm let’s see where I can start.
I am originally adopted from Tegucigalpa, Honduras. My (adoptive) father was born in Palo Villa off the coast of Honduras to my grand-parents that were (also) British missionaries in Honduras. My (adoptive) mother was born and raised in Tegucigalpa. My mother and father met each other in Miami, Florida in the 80’s. My mother had immigrated to the States and my father had settled there after serving in the United States Coast Guard. My parents could not have children of their own so they opted to adopt. My mother returned to Honduras summer of 1989 for the graduation of two of her nieces (my cousins) and had spread the word to family and friends that she was looking to adopt a baby. God has a hand in everything that we do. I am a firm believer that when you are doing God’s work and carrying out his plan for you and the world alike he will facilitate everything. An aunt of my mother’s was leaving her home one summer day in Tegucigalpa to run errands and was approached by an older woman with a baby in arms… she asked Goyita (my mother’s aunt) if she wanted the baby because her own daughter could not take care of the child. Goyita asked her to come back later that evening and the old woman did. I met my (adoptive) mother that same day, I was that baby. For the last twenty-five years she and Goyita have been my family. If that doesn’t embody the power of God, I don’t know what does?
A lot has happened since then. My father passed when I was five of cancer and it’s been me and my mom since then. She has shown me to be a strong and independent woman. I am so proud of her and so grateful to call her mom. She used to send me back to Honduras every summer after school was out. Our last day of school was Friday and I’d be on a plane to Honduras that Saturday. They were some of the best days of my life. It was then at such a young age that I realized how much need there was in this word and my heart hurt for those in need. I guess I heard the whisper at a young age. I am so excited to finally be able to act on it.
Since then I have graduated from Georgia State University and worked for a multitude of companies. I have worked since I was fifteen years old. I have had the opportunity to work for companies such as Toyota Motor Company, Metro PCS Corporation and most recently Delta Air Lines. I have worked abroad in South Korea and even served as a paralegal at an Atlanta top law firm but nothing seems to fit quite right. I know now that God has another plan for me. I have lead such a structured life for the past twenty-five years that “11 Countries in 11 Months” seems scary. It’s hard for me to put aside planning for every little aspect of the trip but I know that I have to gave faith. This is going to be a journey of a lifetime and I cannot wait to share it with all of you. I look forward to opening up to you. I think there is a Nettie in there I have yet to know. So, for now I’m THIS Nettie but I look forward to becoming a NEW Nettie. Wish me luck!
