“Dream big, start small.”
Someone said that the other day at work and it made a lot of sense in my spirit. A lot of times we dream big and then try to conquer that large dream immediately only to find it is not so easy.
For example, at one point around 11 years old I dreamed of being an NBA superstar. Soaring through through the air, clutching the rim between my hands, drowning the ball into the net.
The problem was I was a boney, uncoordinated, fearful baller. I was pretty terrible against my peers. Usually last picked. My confidence, ego, and dream deflated with each game I played. I got worse. I actually remember an embarrassing moment when I was 15 in a JV game.
I was put in with 2 minutes remaining in a game my team was losing badly. At about 30 seconds left some how the ball ended up in my untested hands on the enemies turf. I became completely disoriented and irrational. I immediately chucked the ball as hard as I could to our side of the court. No, there wasn’t a teammate there. Just wide open vapor. The ball luckily hit the backboard and a skilled and tested teammate dashed to retrieve it.
I started too large with my dream. When I was 11 I should of played against the 8 and 9 year olds. Boost my confidence and then work from there. 🙂
What happens when your dream is starting an orphanage? Where to start to avoid failure? That is a question that my friend Ryan asked. Ryan was a participant on a trip I led to Swaziland in January 2010. Since that time God ignited a passion in him for orphans.
I talked with him on the phone in February. He shared his dream again, but shared his frustration with where to start. I suggested he start small. And do an apprenticeship underneath a veteran.
I contacted an expectational missionary from the Philippines, Jeff Long, who has started and runs a number of orphanages. He was trilled with the idea of the apprenticeship. For the last 3 weeks Ryan has been making those small steps to his dream. Watch the video below about Ryan’s dream developing in the Philippines.
