A few weeks ago, a squad-mate of mine, Travis, and I got to travel up north from Penang to Changlun, Malaysia. For me it was a welcome break from city life, as neat as Penang is. Changlun is a town of only a few thousand people ten minutes from the border of Thailand. Our main contact there mentioned several times how “remote” it is (I gently informed him he’s never lived in rural Haiti…).
We went up to visit two girls’ teams for the week. Wow, girls’ teams operate a bit differently than co-ed World Race teams! I think we may have especially have felt the difference this month. In Penang the guys have their own floor and their own bedroom, and let’s just say you can definitely tell it belongs to the guys (although, to be fair, the girls’ floor did not smell that much better…sorry girls).
I can tell you that on that guys floor there were no sticky notes on bathroom walls, there were no regular massage sessions, there was no watching of “The Sound of Music”, there were no little notes of encouragement dropped on our sleeping mats (with snacks!), there were more loofas than just mine for once, and there were certainly no sports bras.
We experienced all of that up in Changlun. Needless to say, Travis and I loved the week.
Thank God for women. I went up there to be an encouragement, and I left more encouraged than I had in weeks. Teams Shekinah and Shiloh were such a blessing to the children’s ministry, and they were such a blessing to Travis and I. My highlight was seeing and hearing what they are learning—in only one team time for the girls I left with several pages of notes.
Women of L Squad, you love so well and there is so much in you. There’s no room for comparison in your lives because each of you has been so beautifully made. Thank you not for what you do but who you are.
