This is a perfect picture of minimalism for World Racers.

Alex Cole had brought the Lord of the Rings trilogy with him heading into Romania. He only had twelve pages left to finish of the all-in-one-fantasy-trilogy-book heading out of Romania and into Ireland. So instead of carrying around the whole dead weight of 996 pages of already read paper, he ripped out the last 12 pages and shoved them in his pocket, slowly throwing away the pages as he neared the end.

You may think, what happens if someone in Romania decides to pick up the English version, 1008 page book and read it all the way to page 996 wondering how pages 997-1108 finish the story? Don’t worry. Alex left his e-mail in the back of the book in case people want to know the ending.

This probably saved him 16 ounces of pack weight.

Stupid I know, but totally brilliant at the same time.

To remember this great feat of minimalism I asked Alex if I could keep the last page as a memento to tape into my journal. Also, I would like to ruin the ending for you, just like people do when they tell you how movies you once wanted to go see in theatres end. The last line in one of the best trilogies ever written is…

“He drew a deep breath. “Well, I’m back,” he said.”
