“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14
It has been quite a month here in the Dominican, full of sweat, beans, new friends, and little children. There are loud ones, mean ones, quiet ones, crying ones, loving ones, smiling ones, kicking ones, taking ones, laughing ones, blessed ones, fatherless ones, homeless ones, etc. Everywhere our team goes children are quick to call out to us or run to us. It has been painful at times, when we’ve had to make them leave, or they turn their backs on us, but also incredible to get to know them. There is usually at least one child outside of our door waiting to play at any given hour of the day (or night). I have no doubt that this will be the case almost everywhere we go.
It is a blessing to get to know these kids and let them amaze us with their joy and spirit, not to mention their faith and support. One of our best friends here in the DR, a young man named Jueso, has been a great friend for the past couple weeks. We’ve been able to share meals with him, praise the Lord with him, read the Bible with him, and pray with him, not to mention laugh, and some of us cry, with him. Chris and I call him “bone crusher” even though he doesn’t even like the nickname. Even though he sleeps on the street, and doesn’t have much at all, he has such a gentle spirit. He is concerned for our safety even though we’ve only known each other 3 weeks. He’s concerned for our friendships and loves being with us.
“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world, and the despised things- and the things that are not- to nullify the things that are, so that no one can boast before him.”
