In the last
two months of my Grandpa’s life
he couldn’t really

use his legs much.

But I still
wanted to get him out of his nursing home when it was possible.

To do so we had a
process called
HUGS.

I would roll his wheelchair up to my car as close as possible.

Get the door open and get in position.

I would then tell him to “Give me a hug and hold tight”.

Then I would basically dead lift him from the
wheelchair into the

passenger seat of my car.

The rest of the process would
still take about 3-4 more
“Hugs” to get him in the right position.

Getting him
out of the car was going through the same steps.

Let’s just say that in a simple trip anywhere – there was a lot of
hugging
going on.

I know all of this soundssweet

But taking him places could be
kind of a
hassle.

It was full body workout and it took time.

Plus the stress of worrying
about
dropping
your 91 year old Grandpa
on the
ground didn’t help.

I
am so
grateful to God – that in
the middle of
battling
my selfishness
over

the difficulty of taking Grandpa
anywhere –
He would prompt me to slow down and appreciate those moments of intimacy.

Now that
he’s gone – I am even more grateful.

So give
someone a hug today.

Appreciate
that hug.

Tell that
person you appreciate them.

Those
moments and people are meant to be cherished.

You will be
grateful you did.
