So, the title of this blog describes my last day of ministry in Darwin, Australia. That's what I was asking about 20 aboriginal kids pretty much all night on Friday at out barbeque. The easiest way to describe this night is just to start from the beginning…
5:00pm: Chelsea and I arrive at Bagot church to meet David and Isobel (our contacts) to pick up the vans and drive the kids to the pool (Chelsea and I drove this month because we could drive a manual). As we waited, we cleaned up the trash left all over the church from a group of people that had been staying there for the week.
5:30: David and Isobel arrive and we go to pick up the vans. I get in one van with Isobel and start picking up kids. Let me just tell you, these kids are VERY loud… and they don't stay in their seats. We stop at one house to get the other van and Isobel jumps out. I wait for about 10 minutes with the kids in the van, in the mean time, about 4 of the boys have fake guns and they are pointing them at my head and at each other and
'shooting' people walking by… and they wouldn't listen to me at all, so I just closed my eyes and prayed for them. The sad thing is that this is the life they know. Then all of the sudden, the other vans take off (or at least I thought they did) and I paniced a little because I didn't know how to get to the pool. But don't worry, I had 15 screaming kids that knew the way.. so they screamed me there….
6:15: The kids ran to the pool… now it's time to cook sausages for everyone and get dinner ready! (Thanks to Callie and Nicole, this went very smooth)!
7:00- Round up the kids and try to get them to stay seated and quiet while we tell them the story of Daniel and the Lion's den and present the gospel. I love this part of the day. Many of these kids are so hungry to hear about Jesus. This is also a challenging part of the day because there is always a group of kids who don't really care about listening… but praise God, they are still there and the point of this ministry is to just love on these kids and show them the love of Jesus through what we do.
7:45: I am standing in the skate park 'monitoring' the kids (they didn't really care what I said) and all of the
sudden a huge toad comes flying past my head, lands on the pavement and bounces to it's death at my feet. Neat. The boys are throwing toads at the girls… and I couldn't stop them. Everything seems normal for a minute, then there's an uproar. WHAT IS GOING ON?! The boys are chasing the girls with a poisinous snake. Neat. So, they finally get the sense to put the snake down, but they weren't done with it. They put it on the ground and started to push each other into it and get as close as they could… keep in mind that the snake is STRIKING at them… oh my.
8:15: I don't know how, but the kids are back in the van. This time they are a little more calm, at least they are all in a seat. So, I'm driving back (keep in mind I'm driving a manual mini-bus on the left side of the road, steering wheel on the right) and I am trying to focus on driving. I hear some kids start yelling and I don't think anything of it because they always yell… then all of the sudden the side door goes flying open!!!! Okay, I am going about 60 mph and there are 3 boys sitting on the floor next to the door!! Oh my gosh.. what is going on!! I start to slow down because i know if I slam on the breaks, the kids may fly out… so they get the door closed in what seems like hours…. and everything goes quiet except the sound of a little boy crying because he is so freaked out. Instead of getting mad and yelling, I use this time to tell them that Jesus just protected them and he sent angels to guard that door so they didn't fall out.
9:00: All the kids are dropped off and I'm on my way back to base. The end.,
Here is a picture I took as I was dropping off the kids… just look at each kid…. and you'll understand… 🙂
