Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio was one of the greatest players who ever stepped foot on a baseball diamond. For 13 years he thrilled the Yankee-faithful as well as fans across the country. And though I didn’t know him personally (though that would have been pretty awesome), I’ve always been struck by how he described the effort he put forth every day:
“There is always some kid who may be seeing me for the first or last time, I owe him my best.”
Huh. Though I’m sure there were days he was exhausted or just didn’t feel like playing, he did it anyway. And he played HARD. He gave it all. Whatever he had, he displayed. It got me thinking about what it looks like to be a Christ-follower day in and day out. Something the Lord has been impressing upon me is that we may be given a divine interaction with someone where we will be the only example of Christ they ever encounter. They may or may not recognize that Love Divine is hugging them, smiling with them, crying with them or holding their hand, but that is exactly what’s happening as the Holy Spirit pours forth from His children.
What an awesome, incredible, thrilling responsibility He has given us. His Spirit is always at work in us, around us and through us, and He quite possibly may perfectly design an encounter between you and another person that will be unlike any conversation either of you have again, because every interaction is like a snowflake; unique and matchless. To rephrase what Joltin’ Joe said, there is always someone who may be experiencing Love for the first and potentially only time. I owe that person, and my King, my best. 🙂
