Can I just have a raw moment of sincerity? . . .
Occupy wall street took over the headlines today. Thousands of young people swarming Wall Street demanding that they are the 99% and this just isn't fair.
Please, before you sign off I want to note that this is not a political statement . . at all.
We are all the 1%. We live in a free country, have the ability and opportunities of education and employment. We have earning power. We have it all.
And those that weren't able to receive it freely in America decades ago, receive it freely now.
We are missing out on the BIG picture. On the lost world out there.
On the starving children.
The homeless families.
The uneducated countries.
We forget that, even though life here is hard, it's nothing compared to life over there.
Imagine not having shoes. Sure, right now you shrug and I would have before. I'm a Floridian, we don't ever wear shoes. But Imagine not having shoes and having to walk MILES barefoot, over rough terrain. Now imagine being famished after that walk and having no way to get food or having to go hunt a chicken or other wild animal before your need can be met.
Imagine being the youngest child born into a home with three other children whose parents' already can't care for. Imagine being the one they give up to the sex industry to earn a few dollars for a meal. Or worse, imagine being left on the side of the road or on the ground of an abandoned hut because your parents' couldn't afford you and didn't know what else to do.
Imagine that perhaps there is a hurt and dying world out there.
The world doesn't need a re-birth of economies or technology. It doesn't need vehicles, clothing, or media.
The world needs hope.
The world needs love.
And we, as a people, need to recognize that. We're so consumed on our own little life.
So stuck on our piece of the planet that we don't ever look beyond what our day planner says or past the next commercial.
And then . . when we do notice the rest of the world we try to fix it our way. With things like computers and ipods.
But that isn't the world's immediate need.
The world needs relationship. They need realization of worth. They need the Father's grace.
The protestors are right.
We do need to make it fair for the 99%.
We do need to make a change in our policies to help the 99%.
But they need to, and we need to, recognize that we are NOT the 99%.
We are the 1% and the world needs us.
