Pat, my team leader, led a worship song in English. The congregation was full of mostly Spanish speakers.
Their reaction? . . .
They started singing along,..
in their language.
It was the most beautiful sound I have heard of 2012.
It was the sound of God's children, worshipping despite the language barrier.
It was the sound of community.
It was the sound of UNITY.
And it took my breath away.
In that moment, I recognized how similar we all are.
In that moment, God revealed the hearts of the people around me;
the moment of pure surrender and dedication to their King.
It was absolutely stunning.
Love brings people together.
And God is the creator of love.
Therefore, God brings people together.
In unity.
Into community; together.
Our host church keeps saying that we are 'su familia' (their family).
It doesn't matter that we are merely a bunch of gringos walking around, clueless to the culture and language.
It doesn't matter that we can't speak a lick of Spanish, and think that 'ba' is just a sound a sheep makes.
(it's actually equivalent to the word 'okay' here)
It doesn't matter here.
Here, in El Salvador, we are hermanos.
Christ unifies us here.
It automatically creates community amongst us.
And it's a constant truth, no matter where we go in this country.
What a beautiful lesson.
Race, language, culture, truly doesn't matter.
We are all children of the Father.
God is our Padre.
Therefore, we are family.
Period.
What a great lesson to learn. 🙂
