I had the opportunity the other day to sit down and talk with a friend and we began to discuss the church in America today.  I feel that the American church today has forgotten the great commission. We have our church mission programs and we pick visitor friendly locations such as Ireland, a small village in Russia, a small town in the Netherlands.  All these places are great, they need Jesus, but are we forgetting the mission field in our own backyards?

Are we, as a church today, carrying around the mentality that if we build the multi-million dollar church, put fancy lights in, big t.v’s, and hire us a talented worship leader that people will just come and knock on the front door.  Most of us have seen the classic movie with Kevin Costner, “Field of Dreams” and the unforgettable line “…if you build it they will come..” .  I wish we could build and they come, but we live in reality and not in a Hollywood movie script.  Just because we build an eye catcher doesn’t mean people will flock to Sunday service.  We are to be “fisher of men” but how often do you catch fish without ever taking our your fishing rod.

Now, some might say Tash this a good point but I want to change the world. I want to start in Southeast Asia, North Africa, and go to the Outback of Australia.  GREAT!!! Awesome, I am excited for you and your willingness but only if that is what God is calling you to do. Do not believe the lies that we can only change the world by hopping on a plane.

I want to take a minute and do a little exercise.
Check your pulse…good your hearts still beating.
Take a deep breath in … alright lungs seem to be functioning good.

Now let me tell you a secret, that I know you already know, your in the world right now. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, the great commission is what your called to do. It doesn’t require a passport and visa,  a plane ticket to who knows where in Africa.  All it requires is pride to take a back seat, some faith, and a strong fishing rod. God will take care of the rest.

I’m praying that today you take out the fishing rod and cast it out into your neighborhood, local Starbucks, work place.  I’m praying even if you don’t catch anything the first time I pray you go back for some more.  I’m praying that you will allow God to move through you as you cast your line. Finally, I’m praying that God would open your eyes so that you may see that they only come when we seek.
