Being away from the weekly schedules of home, I’m really learning the importance of rest. I’m learning not only from the World Race, but also just in my normal Bible reading time with God that the sabbath is important. God did it. He didn’t have to after creating the world, so why? I don’t think He put the day of rest in the Bible because He really needed a day off. I think He rested in the Bible as an example for us to live off of. Resting is important.

I do ministry five days a week, so the weekends are when the time to rest is important. Just like a normal week at home, the weekends are spent relaxing. I’m just learning a different meaning behind the word “relax.” Being able to process all that has happened in the last week and being able to fill up before heading back into it is just as important as actually going to ministry or work or school.

My old version of the word “relax” was to have as much fun as I could in the time I was able. I would take my weekends and do whatever I wanted to do with them. I would go out early in the day and come back later on at night. Then, get this, I would be tired by the end of the weekend and would wake up early Monday mornings not ready for the week. I remember giving my parents a hard time because if we didn’t have something planned for the weekends, I would make my own plans to get out and go do. I was restless when given the opportunities to rest. Looking back now, that wasn’t very healthy.

I’ve learned that a day to sabbath isn’t a day to make myself busy with tons of things. I’m learning what is restful for myself, it’s different for all of us. It’s not about me doing what has to get done or staying busy doing things I can’t do during the week. Rest isn’t being lazy or just laying around doing nothing. God still wants to speak to us on our sabbath day. Rest isn’t supposed to be draining, it’s supposed to fill you up.

I want you to honestly ask yourself how you spend your sabbath. Do you get anxious thinking about it? Do you only think of all that has to get done? I want you to genuinely reflect on yourself, not on others. What does your day of rest look like? Do you need to revisit what your definition of rest is? Trust me, I’ve revisited it and am still working on what it should look like. God created an example of rest not because He needed it, but because He knows we do. We need to rest.
