I never would have
imagined spending Christmas and New Years in Malawi, Africa. But we did, and it
was a lot of fun.
Throughout the month we worked on various different project,
my group specifically worked on building a coffee shop.

We wanted it to be a place where anyone could feel
comfortable to come, the love of Jesus could be shown, and be somewhere people
could feel safe to come and relax. This is why we decided upon the name,
“Common Grounds”.

Together we came up with the schematics of the room,
measurements and design for the counters, fabric, colors, shelving…everything.
We helped carve wood, make pillows, place bamboo, paint signs, paint the walls,
kick down old railings, move bricks, varnish; the works. It was such a
rewarding feeling seeing project some
together like it did. Unfortunately we were unable to complete due to lack of
Malawian workers and materials on some days (T.I.A.), but we were able to help
them get about 80% done.

I was asked to give the Christmas sermon, and four others
from my team were in the Christmas skit we put on.

Along with these projects, the rest of the groups were able
to work on a boat that they want to use to bring supplies and the message of God
along the coast, a school/church, and other work around the property.

I already miss the Matthee family more than I can put into
words. They are a family who walks out true boldness for Christ. They left for
mission work from South Africa with no money in the bank, but God provided.
They are in the middle of a Muslim community where break-ins are frequent on
their property, yet they continue to have faith in the protection of God. They
are up against so much, but stand firm in the fact that Jesus is on their side.
I was so inspired by them for the month we were at their place. I will never
forget them.

Johan, Marie, Zenika, Johan Jr., and Dirk you are also
missed and loved so much. Praying for you!
